Our signature style is our Do-Taar Chikankari ensembles. It takes a minimum of three months for an all-over Do-Taar kurta to embroider. We try and incorporate as many chikankari stitches as possible in our pieces. These pieces are a reflection of how talented our artisans are. We have it adorned with sequins, pearls, mirrors, etc. after the thread work has been done. These pieces, even though embroidered and embellished entirely, are almost weightless which makes them even more special.
Machine work is not real Chikankari. The authenticity of any Chikankari can be checked by flipping the fabric. You can see the number of threads used, lose ends and knots. If it is done by machine, it’ll be symmetrical and very clean whereas, real Chikankari which is done by hand only, is very messy on the back side of the fabric.
Each and every piece at ‘The Mohi Studio’ undergoes a process of quality check. We check for any kinds of cuts, or spots on the fabric. If there’s any flaw, it is taken care of immediately. There’s a number of ways of rectifying the same. We use best quality fabric, lining and trims. We use fast dyes and best quality material for embellishments. Even the thread that is used for embroidery is quality checked. The stitching is done by an electric stitching machine only for cleaner stitches. The hemming is done by hand. Each and every process is looked after carefully to produce the best quality product.
We don’t use synthetic materials in our garments. Mostly we use pure fabrics only. If not, we use bemberg fabrics which are eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics. Apart from that, we use the cuttings to make jutties. The fabric that is left on each side of the garment, we join those strips of fabric and make them into Kurtis. We try and make use of most of the fabric.
Yes, we offer custom-made Chikankari garments. You can either pick a design from our existing pieces and we can customise it accordingly (colour, silhouette, embroidery, embellishment, etc.). Or if the client needs something entirely new, we sit with client, try and understand their perspective of what they want. We show them swatches that they can pick from, we have it done in a colour and silhouette of their liking. Before finalising the garment, we have a small swatch of the embroidery as well as the embellishment and colour done and we start with the embroidery only when the client is satisfied with the swatch. It takes a few months to be embroidered, and therefore the client needs to give us a certain amount of time depending on the design. An Ek-Taar saree can take up to eighteen months to be embroidered after which is goes for embellishments.
